A Study on Formulation and Evaluation of Herbal Chyawanprash Chocolate

ABSTRACT:

Now a days, immunity boosting or maintaining immunity system is becoming a first n most important priority. Hence goal of research is to prepare a completely herbal chyawanprash having excellent immunity boosting efficacy with a very attractive type of chocolate formulation. This new idea is making chyawanprash chocolate into the toffee shape is not only to increase attractiveness of product in children but also cover bitter test of some used herbals. In this formulation 35 herbal ingredients are used including amla as a prime ingredient which is enriched with vitamin c.

1. INTRODUCTION:

One of the most famous Ayurvedic health supplement called Chyawanprash is made up of a super concentrated blend of nutrient-rich herbs along with various minerals1. In Ayurveda, Chyawanprash is classified under the category of Rasayana1,2. Chyawanprash is also spelled as chyavanaprash, chyavanaprasha, chyavanaprasam, and chyawanaprash. The word Chyawanprash is combination of two lexes, i.e. “Chyawan” and “Prasha”. Chyawan is the name of a sage, and it is also symbolizes ‘degenerative change’, while Prasha means a drug or foodstuff which is suitable for consumption1. Chyawanprash is used traditionally to increase the vitality, vigor as well as for delaying the aging process and for maintaining the physique3.

 

The recipe of chyawanprash has remained India’s one of the most popular and widely used remedy for around past 2000 years, from the time of the Vedas1,3,4. Chyawanprash is formulated by using and processing around 50 medicinal herbs, minerals sugar, honey, ghee, Indian gooseberry jam, etc4,5,6. Chyawanprash contains many Ayurvedic ingredients which helps in boosting the immunity, protects against infections, as well as it provides nutrition and energy6. Chyawanprash holds multiple health benefits1. It has been extensively used from ancient times as an Ayurvedic health supplement and as a medicine which increase immunity and longevity1. Consumption of Chyawanprash has been a part of every Indian’s life from the day it was introduced, irrespective of sociocultural, political, and scientific factors1. It is famous for its antiaging effects long before vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant supplements1. Chyawanprash which is consists of Amla/Amalaki pulp as a base is considered to be the most effective Rasayana for sustaining homeostasis1-7. Regular intake Chyawanprash helps maintains physiological functions as well as rejuvenates the whole body system1,8. The foremost historically recorded recipe for Chyawanprash is reported in the Charaka Samhita, the ancient Ayurvedic classic, where it is appreciated as being superior to all other herbal rejuvenative tonics1,9. Immune system is major and vital system of our body which protects our body from outside invaders like Bacteria, viruses, fungi, toxins, etc. every part of our body including our immune system functions better. When protected from environmental assaults and boostered by healthy living strategies such as exercise, eating healthy food etc.

 

2. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

2.1 MATERIALS:

2.1.1 Collection of samples:

Pueraria tuberosa (Bidarikand), Santalum album (White sandalwood), Justicia adhatoda (Vasaka), Anacyclus pyrethrum (Akarkara), Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari), Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi), Aegle marmelos (Bel), Kamal Kesar (Sacred Lotus), Nardostachys jatamansi (Jatamansi), Tribulus terrestris (Gokhru), Curcuma zedoaria (Kachur), Cyperus rotundus (Nagarmotha), Syzygium aromaticum (Cloves), Laurus nobilis (Bay leaf), Inula racemose (Pushkaramul), Pistacia integerrima (Kakadshingi), Aegle marmelo (Dashmool), Boerhavia diffusa (Punarnava), Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy), Ocimum tenuiflorum (Tulsi), Murraya koenigii (Curry), Zingiber officinale (Ginger), Glycyrrhiza glabra (Mulethi), Elettaria cardamomum (Elaichi), Mesua ferrea (Nagkesar), Madhu (Honey), Crocus sativus (Saffron), Piper (Small piper), Cinnamon cassia (Cinnamon bark), Phyllanthus emblica (Amla), Kishmish, Ghee, Banslochan, Sugar were collected from areas of Sangli district.

 

2.2 METHODS:

2.2.1 Preparations of Chyawanprash:

1kg of raw Phyllanthus emblica (Amla) was taken in a vessel and boiled on minimum flame for 1Hr. with sufficient amount water (Fig. 1A). After boiling remove the seeds from Phyllanthus emblica (Amla). Crush the pulp to make consistence paste (Fig. 1B). At next step, make powder of Pueraria tuberosa (Bidarikand), Santalum album (White sandalwood), Justicia adhatoda (Vasaka), Anacyclus pyrethrum (Akarkara), Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari), Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi), Aegle marmelos (Bel), Kamal Kesar (Sacred Lotus), Nardostachys jatamansi (Jatamansi), Tribulus terrestris (Gokhru), Curcuma zedoaria (Kachur), Cyperus rotundus (Nagarmotha), Inula racemose (Pushkaramul), Pistacia integerrima (Kakadshingi), Aegle marmelo (Dashmool), Boerhavia diffusa (Punarnava), Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy), Glycyrrhiza glabra (Mulethi), Mesua ferrea (Nagkesar), Chocolate Compound and mix all this equally. After mixing all the herbs, add Ghee and stir the mixture to form uniform paste (Fig. 1C). Then cook this mixture for half-hour and then add raisins (Fig. 1D). After the colour change, add the 1 cup honey and half kg sugar and again cook it half-hour (Fig. 1E). Add powdered flavoring agents, Syzygium aromaticum (Cloves), Laurus nobilis (Bay leaf), Zingiber officinale (Ginger), Elettaria cardamomum (Elaichi), Crocus sativus (Saffron), Piper (Small piper), Cinnamon cassia (Cinnamon bark). After adding all ingredients mix it uniformly and cool it (Fig. 1F). When Chyawanprash is ready then retain it for one day. After one day make small bolls of chyawanprash (Fig. 1G) and rap it in the aluminum paper (Fig. 1H).

2.2.2 Evaluation of the Prepared Chyawanprash:

2.2.2.1 Ellagic test for phenol:

2gm chyawanprash was taken and treated with 4 drops of glacial acetic acid followed by 4 drops of NaNO ² Solution and shake the mixture.

 

2.2.2.2 Test for saponins:

2gm of the chyawanprash was diluted with 10ml distilled water and vigorously shaken well for 20 min in a graduated cylinder.

 

2.2.2.3 Ferric chloride Test for flavonoids:

5 drops of ferric chloride solution were added 2 gm chyawanprash.

 

2.2.2.4 Sulphuric acid test for glycosides:

2.5 gm chyawanprash, 2ml glacial acetic acid was added. This was followed by addition of one drop of FeCl₃ the was then acidified by drop wise addition of concreted H₂SO₄

 

2.2.2.5 Test for steroid:

2ml acetic anhydride was added to 1gm of chyawanprash. The solution was acidified by dropwise addition of sulphuric acid.

 

2.2.2.6 Wagner’s test for alkaloids:

5 drops of Wagner’s reagent were added to 2 gm chyawanprash. The mixture was warmed for one minute.

 

2.2.2.7 Braemer’s test for tannin:

2ml of % ferric chloride was added to 2 gm chyawanprash.

4. CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION:

Chyawanprash is a most famous traditional Ayurvedic immune booster recipe. It has a long history of ethical origin, development, household preparation and usage. Chyawanprash has grown to industrial production and marketing in packed form to a large number of consume/patients like any food or health care product. My project work is based on chyawanprash include some modification in the form of candy, so that every consumer experience its therapeutic value in modern way the preparation also includes some excipient alternative then the original once which enhance the immune boosting activity. From the test and result we/I can conclude that the prepared formulation is very effective and ready to manufacture/made on industrial seal. The prepared chyawanprash is organic material and its quality is excellent. It does not contain any chemical substance. The new idea of making chyawanprash in chocolate form is just to increase the attractiveness of the product for the children it is good in test as well as in its nutrition value also the chyawanprash increase the immunity and also boost are health daily intake of it shows the real result, resist the body from diseases.
